Meet The Team - Darren Auchnie

Next up in our Meet The Team is one of our IT Systems Engineer's Darren Auchnie. Let’s hear what he’s got to say about his current role!

How long have you been part of the ITHD team?

I have been with IT Hotdesk for almost two years. I have around 11 years-experience working in IT related positions for a wide range of organisations including Oil & Gas operators and service companies, as well as managed IT service providers.

Tell me about your current role?

As one of our IT Systems Engineers, I work closely with clients and the wider IT Hotdesk team to manage and monitor systems and infrastructure. My role includes installing, configuring, testing and maintaining operating systems and software, ensuring the highest levels of desktop, server and network support.

What is it that you enjoy about helping people with their IT challenges and needs?

I get a lot of satisfaction from solving the most complex of issues. I love nothing more than to troubleshoot and get to the root of the issue and reach problem resolution. I really enjoy gathering the data, analysing the situation and working with clients, vendors and colleagues to solve the problem.

What is something you learned in the last week?

Something completely unrelated to IT but did you know that the hole in a spaghetti strainer serves as a measuring utensil? If you fill the hole with raw spaghetti strands, it equates to one full serving. I found that interesting!

Are you handy at fixing things?

Yes, I am one of those people that will try to fix anything. I guess I am handy when it comes to home DIY etc. and I enjoy researching how to repair something. If I have the right tools to tackle the job, I’ll give it a go. But I also know when to call in the professionals!

What was the best concert you ever attended?

I have been a Pink Floyd fan for many years and got the chance to see them back in 1994 at Earls Court London. It was their ‘Division Bell’ Tour and it blew me away. Their guitar skills appeared effortless and the music was incredible.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

A day you don’t learn something is a day wasted. I am a lifelong learner and I believe that knowledge is the primary source of value in our world today. The ability to expand your mind and learn new things helps you to keep achieving and break down any barriers that stand in your way.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?

I did a bungee jump at the Marriot Hotel in Aberdeen from a crane. It was with work colleagues over 20 years ago to raise funds for charity. I was terrified but it was such a rush, full of elation when you make it to the bottom. Would I do it again, probably not!
