Top IT trends for 2021

With over 25 years of IT experience, there’s no denying that managing director Gordon Christie is an expert in his field. Based on lessons learned in 2020, changes in consumer behavior, and technological advancements, Gordon provides some insight into the 2021 IT trends.

“I think that we can all agree that last year was like no other. The world and the way that we operate has changed, quite possibly for good. In order to survive, most businesses will have had to adapt and introduce new technologies. Naturally, this has led to a change in technology trends.

Hybrid working

The impact of Covid-19 on businesses has led to an increase in ‘anywhere operations’, where people have been forced to move out of their office and work from home. Although working from home is likely to be the norm for some, in 2021 we will see an increase in hybrid working, and people will split their time between the office and home.

Cyber Security Mesh

As more people are working from home, the increase in remote working has led to a significant rise in the threats companies are exposed to. Cybersecurity mesh allows the identity of a person or organisation to define the security perimeter and offer a more responsive approach.

Distributed Cloud

Organisations are often hesitant to commit to a total migration to the cloud model and will often use a combination/hybrid approach that incorporates both a private cloud inspired and public cloud-style of computing. This will lead to an increase in the use of the distributed cloud in 2021. Like any emerging technology, it will have some challenges however there are vast benefits including:

  1. Increased compliance with regulatory requirements that data must be in a specific customer location
  2. Reduced network failure risk because cloud services can reside in local or semilocal subnets
  3. A dramatic increase in the number and availability of locations where cloud services can be hosted

Artificial Intelligence for business

As technology evolves and more time is spent online, the use of artificial intelligence in businesses will continue to increase. The use of voice recognition software allows for computers to support businesses, streamline operations which will allow for a better quality service whilst saving money in the process.

In order for companies to thrive, they will need to successfully implement these new technologies and have a robust IT system in place to support it. If they haven’t done it already, companies should review their IT strategy, identify any gaps, and develop solutions that will help their business achieve its goals.
