Next up in our Meet The Team is Ewan Marshall. Lets hear about his biggest work challenge and his love of cars!
Name: Ewan Marshall
Title: IT Systems Technician
How long have you been part of the ITHD team?
I joined the team at IT Hotdesk in January 2019, although it feels much longer – in a good way I should add! I previously worked for a small IT company in Aberdeen for a number of years and although I was more than comfortable with what my new role and areas of responsibilities entailed, it can be daunting joining a new team as you are completely out of your comfort zone. However, I had nothing to worry about as the team were so welcoming and I settled into the company in no time.
When you were 5 years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was younger, I dreamed of joining the Army and becoming a Solider. I was always outside playing ‘Army’ with my friends, a typical little boy I suppose. I always had a fascination with adventure, and I idolised the characters on TV including Michael Caine in the film Zulu.
I have a great deal of admiration for those who join the Army and fight for their Queen and Country.
What do you most enjoy about the work you do?
The one thing I love about my work is that technology is always evolving and changing so there is always something new to learn. I find it fascinating to look back at how far technology has come over years and let’s face it, it’s not expected to stop anytime soon!
At IT Hotdesk, every day is a school day and the one thing that I really enjoy about my role is that you never get two days the same. It’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.
What has been your biggest work challenge, and how did you overcome it?
Recently we had to completely rebuild a client’s server from scratch after their entire operating system failed and could not be restored. For any business, an outage like this can incur significant costs and have a huge impact on productivity and performance so our priority was to get the systems operating again as quickly as possible. This was a frustrating time for the client and a challenging time for us, however it was extremely rewarding to see the client back to business knowing you played a key part.
What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
Possibly something to do with cars. I love cars and I am a massive fan of motor racing and enjoy the excitement and thrill of the sport. Perhaps I could have been an F1 driver!
Who inspires you?
Due to my love of motor racing, particularly endurance racing, Nicki Thiim is a big inspiration to me. It’s heartening to witness his sheer determination to his sport and commitment to giving back to his local community.
What is the craziest thing you have ever done?
When I was 16, I had the opportunity to fly a powered glider. It was initially terrifying switching the engine off when we were up in the air and I did initially think we were going to crash! However, the adrenaline kicked in when I started to relax and I quickly realised how peaceful it was to be up in the air, looking down on the world with nothing but your thoughts. It was amazing!
What are you currently watching on Netflix?
I really enjoy old school Top Gear so I’m currently watching the Grand Tour on Amazon Prime.
